The book begins with an introductory chapter that describes the different schools of historical thought as well as the history of history writing, setting the stage for a discussion of the different types of historical sources and the organization of the historical profession. After that, Going to the Sources becomes a hands-on manual, helping the reader identify and obtain the many sources--both old and new--available to historical researchers. Online databases for historical researchers have improved enormously in recent years, as have college library gateways to them. Better access to a wider range of scholarly titles and the increasing availability of full-text articles prompted a major overhaul of those parts of the book dealing with research. Likewise, the section on conducting research on the Internet receives extended treatment. The student-authored historiographic essay--a cornerstone of the first two editions--has been replaced by a new one, rendered in full and enhanced with marginal notations pointing out the major components of a successful essay. Finally, new appendices provide easy-to-follow examples of style for footnotes, endnotes, and bibliographical entries, as well as a list of commonly used scholarly abbreviations.
